The weekly classes consist of various
quarterly blocks A and B that alternates between Wednesdays(I - General
Course) and Thursday (II - human figure). A modules deals with perception in general. The B modules are specially concerned with the human figure.
DESCRIPTION OF THE QUATERLY BLOCKS:
A Module: perception and classical basics: General course
This course proposes every quarter a varied program adapted to each person: At the atelier: plasterwork, still-lifes, draped tissue, portraits, copies ...
Thursday only : live model (9hours) Outside (max. 2 or 3 times each quarter): in the sculpture departments
at the Louvre. Various buildings and public gardens in Paris. Program: 1.Exercise of perception: the set, the contours, the masses, the empty and the full ... 2.Initiation in perspective, morphology and composition. 3.Study of colours, tones and values. Preparation of a pallet. Any technique: in particular oil, ink, pastel, charcoal and pencil.
B Block; The human figure: Course with model Wednesday afternoon and evening : Poses from 5 to 45 minutes/1 hour. Nude and portrait (21 hours *) ; Drawing at the Louvre (6 hours) ; Drawing after plasters and reproductions (9 hours). Thursday: Sketches and long poses by about three weeks with the model - nude and portrait (21 hours *), morphology (5 hours), Clay modelling (4 hours), écorché drawing at the Musée d'Orsay (6 hours). Any technique: in particular oil, ink, pastel, charcoal and pencil lead.

Long pose with model. Drawing or oil. Drawing: Study of the face structures; simplified perception. Oil: in the classic way (draft in oil juice and modelling with oil in half-paste). Free interpretation. All techniques: in particular oil, ink, pastel, charcoal and pencil.

The course runs in two phases, according to the method of Bernard Bouton: Day 1: Study and drawing with values and flat surfaces. Preparation of scale model. Collage Day 2: and 3:Transfer on the wall; Completion with mixed techniques.
Setting up a project and a model: Drawing in values with classical forms we then de-structure in a collage. Transfer on the canvas previously placed on the wall; preparation of the colours with various mediums (caparol, oil, egg, surface filler ...) and a variety of pigments. Completion with brush, knife and platoir. Canvas of large sizes (175 cm x 100 cm).
In the level I workshop, we work on perspective with sticks and a glass: taking views and angles and integrating an imaginary window. In this complementary course, the basic rules of perspective are studied: Vanishing point, point of distance, circles in perspective, arches ... Drawing of imaginary architecture.

Mark Tennant is painter and is currently Director of Graduate Fine Art Department at the Academy of Art University of San Francisco (visit Marks webside). His personnal art, his long experience in teaching and his passionated understanding of classical painting gives considerable weight to his generous sens for teaching.
It is recommanded to make as quickly as possible, a choice of paintings from the Louvre you'd
like to copy. The choice can be made over the Louvre webside (link).The request for preferences of works in matter to copy, shall be deposited before january at the museum.
